D6 Dice for Wargames, RPGs & More: Why a 12-Pack Makes Sense

D6s are the workhorses of tabletop gaming. Wargames throw them by the handful, dice-pool RPGs build whole systems around them, and plenty of tables need far more than the single six-sider tucked into a set.

If your game regularly asks for several D6s at once, a matching 12-pack keeps big rolls easy to read and saves everyone from borrowing dice halfway through the turn. Here are some of the games and situations where twelve D6s actually make sense.

Warhammer: When One D6 Is Never Enough

Miniature wargames are the obvious home for a pile of six-sided dice. Games such as Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar use D6s throughout play, so a busy turn can quickly turn into a handful.

A matching 12-pack is practical here: larger rolls are faster to gather, your dice stay easy to separate from your opponent’s, and you can pick a set that suits the army if that is your sort of thing. Matching the army is optional. Looking good while the dice betray you is apparently not.

Dice-Pool RPGs: Blades in the Dark, Shadowrun & More

Some RPGs do not just use the D6 occasionally—the D6 pool is the core mechanic.

In Blades in the Dark, players roll groups of D6s and usually read the highest result. Shadowrun is another well-known dice-pool game, where character abilities and circumstances can build much larger pools. Free League’s Year Zero Engine also includes D6-based pool mechanics, although the exact rules vary by game.

For systems like these, owning twelve matching D6s is less about collecting extras and more about having the right tool for the game.

Skirmish Games, Homebrew Systems & Everyday Table Use

The D6 reaches well beyond the biggest names in tabletop gaming. Independent skirmish games, historical wargames, homebrew RPGs and board games all find uses for the familiar six-sider.

A D6 pack can also be useful for:

  • Large damage or attack rolls
  • Random encounter and treasure tables
  • Tracking wounds, counters and temporary resources
  • Generating characters, locations or other random results
  • Replacing missing board-game dice
  • Designing and playtesting an original game
  • Settling matters that have become too dramatic for ordinary conversation

Why a 12-Pack?

Twelve is a useful middle ground. It gives you enough dice for a lot of common pools without turning the game bag into a brick of thirty-six six-siders.

  • Warhammer: enough for many attack, damage or save rolls.
  • Dice-pool RPGs: room for larger skill pools without mixing several sets.
  • Shared tables: easy to split between players for one-shots, board games or teaching sessions.
  • Tracking: spare dice can handle counters, wounds and other temporary resources.

If you only need an occasional D6 for a D&D damage roll, the one in a standard polyhedral set is usually enough. A dedicated pack starts making sense when six-siders are a regular part of how your game actually plays.

Why Liquid-Core D6 Dice?

Function comes first. Each IceForge D6 12 Pack contains twelve matching sharp-edge D6s with clear numbering and the same moving liquid-core effect across the whole handful.

The liquid cores add the collector part: colour and shimmer continue moving after the dice land. One is fun to watch. Twelve at once make a big roll hard to ignore.

The current D6 12 Pack collection includes:

They are still game pieces first. The moving cores just make a twelve-die roll a lot more fun to watch.

When Should You Buy a Dedicated D6 Set?

Buy one when your game regularly asks for several D6s, you want a shared table pool, or you would rather roll one coordinated set than a handful gathered from different dice bags.

For occasional six-sided rolls, use what you already have. For games built around D6s, twelve matching dice quickly stop feeling excessive.
